The Million Dollar Team — A Story of Community and Compassion

Meeting Hope & Cope’s mission to support and accompany people with cancer would not be possible without the help of our donors.

We’ve been fortunate to count Group Dorval-Sources-St-Henri as a staunch supporter.

Since 2008, the team at Group Dorval-Sources-St-Henri has organized an annual walkathon in support of Hope & Cope.

This year, they raised an impressive $71,000 in their campaign.

Over the past 16 years, their unwavering commitment and effort have cumulatively raised more than $1 million in support of Hope & Cope’s Exercise and Rehabilitation Program. This milestone speaks volumes about their dedication and generosity.

Often, when people donate to a cause, they have a personal story related to that cause. But Alex Trichas, Gus Anagnostaras, and brothers Chris, Andre, and Nick Dimopoulos have a different story to tell.

“We wanted to raise funds for breast cancer support and research,” says Alex. “A friend of ours told us about Hope & Cope, and the great work they did for people with cancer. From that discussion, we decided to raise money for Hope & Cope and have been doing it since 2008.”

The three-part recipe for success

Raising $1 million over 16 years requires a lot of work and dedication, and Alex says it boils down to three elements: keeping things simple, community support, and teamwork.

On keeping things simple: “Every penny we raise goes to Hope & Cope. We don’t have extra administrative costs. We don’t ask for minimum donations, except for people who want a tax receipt.”

On teamwork: “Gus, a former chef, takes care of everything related to the barbecue. From how many barbecues and chefs we need, to the number of grills, napkins, and burgers. One of our assistant controllers handles everything that has to do with donations, from tallying all the information, to sending reminders and calling donors after the walkathon. Chris, Andre, Nick, and I take care of the logistics like city permits, raffles, and the DJ.”

On community support: “Our community believes in us. They see the benefits of what we do and it encourages them to donate year after year.”

It’s all about helping people

Group Dorval-Sources-St-Henri’s reputation goes well beyond the Montreal community. In 2015, they won the Canadian auto parts industry’s “Jobber of the Year” award—the equivalent of the Stanley Cup.

While part of that recognition came from their fundraising efforts, it’s not what makes them put on the yearly event at St Maxime Park in Chomedey Laval.

“What makes me most happy is seeing how many people come every year to show their support,” says Alex. “Some people are patients or cancer survivors. They have a smile on their faces and they say, ‘If it wasn’t for you I don’t know where I would be. Two years ago I was in a dark place and today I’m walking and I’m strong!’”
