My name is Giovanna Michetti. I’m a 30-year volunteer with Hope & Cope and the Look Good, Feel Better program.

Look and Feel Better is a program dedicated to helping people with cancer by teaching them how to manage the appearance-related impact of cancer and its treatment.

Skin care, cosmetics, wigs and hair alternatives are amongst the many topics that we cover in our workshop.

In my long-time role as a team leader of Look Good, Feel Better workshops at Hope & Cope’s Cancer Wellness Centre, I really feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to make a difference in the life of so many women living with cancer.

I’m often asked what motivates me to continue. My answer is really simple.

It’s very satisfying to witness the positive change in a woman as she leaves our workshop. She walks out smiling, her spirits are lifted, and she also feels very confident that she will be able to carry out the simple steps she has learned, thus helping her to continue to feel more like herself.

My most memorable moment as a volunteer

I have so many memorable moments as a volunteer.

One that comes to my mind frequently is the woman who, the day after a workshop, called Hinda, our then host site volunteer coordinator. She let Hinda know that prior to the workshop she was so disappointed in the change in her appearance she could barely look at herself in the mirror.

So she had covered up all the mirrors in her home. However, after the workshop she went home and she uncovered all the mirrors. I think that says a lot.

I’d just like to say kudos to everyone who gives of their time to volunteer, to share their time to help someone else.

I’d like to end with a quote from Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

You, too, can make a significant difference in the lives of people living with cancer. Consider becoming a volunteer with Hope & Cope today.
