Fortunately, we\u2019ll never know.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila Kussner, z\u00a0\u00bbl, O.C., O.Q., C.O.M. was known for the creation of Hope &amp; Cope, her unwavering drive to improve care for cancer survivors, and, of course, her unparalleled ability to raise funds.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had accomplished much before her death on August 6, 2024:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>She founded Hope &amp; Cope in 1981 and pioneered peer-based cancer support in hospital settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hope &amp; Cope established Canada\u2019s first Young Adult Patients\u2019 support group<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>She opened the Hope &amp; Cope Wellness Centre in 2007, Montreal\u2019s first hospital-affiliated cancer wellness facility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>She raised an estimated $100 million throughout her lifetime for cancer care and medical research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>She spearheaded the creation of McGill University\u2019s Department of Oncology, raising $30 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>She helped establish the Christine and Herschel Victor \u2013 Hope &amp; Cope Chair in Psychosocial Oncology, Quebec\u2019s first research chair of its kind<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result she received many honours:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Officer of the Order of Canada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Officer of the Order of Quebec<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commander of the Order of Montreal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Honorary doctorates from McGill University and Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robert Fisher Fellowship Award from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Queen\u2019s Diamond Jubilee Medal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award in recognition of her significant humanitarian work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that only scratches the surface.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While those accomplishments are remarkable for any person, it\u2019s what happened behind closed doors that truly defined Sheila. The late-night phone calls to check on friends travelling. The handwritten notes on expensive stationery. The part that very few people knew. The part that touched many people profoundly.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>The To-Do Lists<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring COVID, we had many long conversations about the future,\u201d Suzanne explains. \u201cSheila knew she was aging. She knew she wasn\u2019t well, and she knew there were a lot of things she wanted to do. So she had to-do lists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila would share her lists with Suzanne, crossing items off, adding new ones. \u201cJust the week before she died, she said that whenever her time came, I had to finish the lists!\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lists were not the type of \u201cbucket list items\u201d where you try to do the most you can for yourself. They were all about helping others.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight up until the day she died, she was still trying to get doctors\u2019 appointments for people who didn\u2019t have one,\u201d Suzanne says. \u201cShe was still trying to find a job for somebody who was out of work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Purposeful Acts of Kindness<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila approached helping others with the same methodical intensity she brought to her fundraising campaigns.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHer acts of kindness were very purposeful,\u201d Suzanne says. \u201cIt was not a one-size-fits-all response to people. She thought, \u2018What would make this special for a patient, a volunteer, a donor or a friend?\u2019 Sometimes it was sharing a book, sometimes it was writing them a poem that made them laugh. She wrote things that were unique to that person and people loved her for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with flowers\u2014and Sheila received many\u2014there was intention. \u201cSometimes she\u2019d say, on her birthday, that her house kind of looked like a funeral parlour with so many flowers. But she would give them to people very purposely. She just said, \u2018You know, this person could use some cheering up. It might be just what they need.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila would go through extraordinary lengths just to add a little brightness to someone\u2019s day. \u201cI remember days when she wasn\u2019t feeling well herself but insisted on visiting a friend or a patient in hospital to spend time with them and give them encouragement before upcoming treatment or because they were feeling down,\u201d says Suzanne. \u201cWe would go in the evening so that she wouldn\u2019t be stopped by too many people recognizing her as I wheeled her around in her wheelchair to their rooms. The whole effort to get her there was disproportionate to the time spent\u2014sometimes only five minutes\u2014but the time spent was just magical for that person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It made a huge difference and that was all that mattered to Sheila.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond Hope &amp; Cope\u2019s official programs, Sheila operated what Suzanne calls \u201cher own compassionate fund.\u201d The unofficial \u201cSheila Kussner Compassionate Fund,\u201d if you will.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think what people don\u2019t know is how many times she used her own money to get help for people who didn\u2019t have it,\u201d explains Suzanne. \u201cShe just thought the system favoured you if you\u2019re well off. Ill health is an equalizer, but access to resources is not equal. So she absolutely went above and beyond to try and give access to resources to people who didn\u2019t have them\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>The Treasure Trove of Drafts<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Suzanne and Sheila\u2019s family cleaned out her home, they discovered something that would surprise many who knew her as a natural speaker and fundraiser.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-srcset=\"https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom.jpg 800w, https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom-768x512.jpg 768w\" decoding=\"async\"   data-src=\"https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38160 lazyload\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom.jpg 800w, https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hopeandcope.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/PBL-HopeampCopeSheilaJune2023-20434-Custom-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe found boxes and boxes of drafts of letters and speeches that she\u2019s given,\u201d says Suzanne. \u201cThey contained passages that were underlined and paraphrased and indications of where to put emphasis: say this slowly, say this clearly. Despite the number of speeches she gave in her life, she was not a natural speaker. Sometimes the emphasis was different in different copies because obviously she would practise that and say, \u2018No, no, the emphasis should be somewhere else.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleanup also revealed the extent to which Sheila treasured connections with others. \u201cWe found lots of notes that people had written to her that she had treasured and kept aside. And given the thousands of letters that came into her house, she kept an awful lot of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That connection goes both ways, as many people kept the notes that Sheila wrote over the years. One donor, Sal Guerrera, is such an example. \u201cHe\u2019s kept every single note she\u2019s ever written to him, and he\u2019s putting them into a book.\u201d According to Suzanne, many others have said the same: \u201cThey say, \u2019I\u2019ve got so many notes from Sheila, and I prize them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These weren\u2019t casual thank-you notes nor were they electronic cards that have become the norm. Sheila\u2019s notes were handwritten. \u201cThey\u2019re full of hope,\u201d explains Suzanne. \u201cShe would write a beautiful condolence note when someone lost a person dear to them. And on the anniversary of that loss, many have told me that they\u2019ll pull out Sheila\u2019s note and read it because it was just so compassionate. It\u2019s ongoing healing for some people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Finding Joy in the Joy of Others and Going the Extra Mile<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila found genuine happiness in the happiness of others.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think people know how much she did, but I don\u2019t think they realize how much joy she found in doing it,\u201d Suzanne says. \u201cShe found joy in other people\u2019s joy: at their birthdays, weddings, or birth of a child. And that was a burden she took on herself. She really felt for other people in their grief, in their sickness, because she knew grief and she knew sickness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suzanne often returns to what she calls Sheila\u2019s life mantra: Go the extra mile.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe always thought that there was something wrong with our system when we didn\u2019t go the extra mile. And she didn\u2019t think that was extraordinary. She just thought that was what one human being should do for another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This philosophy extended to her vision for Hope &amp; Cope\u2019s future. \u201cShe was curious about the future,\u201d concludes Suzanne.\u201dShe really thought Hope &amp; Cope had made a difference in her life by always going the extra mile. Sheila told me, \u2019It\u2019s a pity I won\u2019t be around to see how it turns out many years from now, but I hope they always remember that ill health has no time clock. Just always go the extra mile because you don\u2019t know what\u2019s in someone\u2019s life and how a moment of empathy and compassion can make such an enormous difference.\u2019 It is a value she lived by and a value she has bequeathed to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If you would like to celebrate Sheila\u2019s legacy and contribute to Hope &amp; Cope\u2019s continuing work, consider attending the upcoming Butterflies and Bubbles fundraising event.
