12 ways to ease the back-to-school transition

By Sandy Lipkus

Getting your child ready to start the school year can be trying at the best of times. This can be especially challenging when you are also balancing medical appointments, treatments, symptoms of fatigue, or pain management. How can you make this time a little less stressful for you and your family? Here are some suggestions:

1. Accept help from anyone who offers. Family and friends may be able to assist you with shopping, registering for extracurricular activities or car pools.

2. Check out the option of purchasing school supplies on line. Some schools already have a program of a prepurchased package of school supplies. Investigate. School uniforms and clothing may also be purchased in this way

3. Cook in larger batches and freeze for use during the week.

4. Try and take a few small naps during the day. This may help to recharge your batteries.

5. Haircuts? Some salons will make home visits. Check out your local salons

6. Try and schedule medical appointments to coincide with your schedule. This may not always be possible but staff might be flexible in order to accommodate your wishes. Nothing to lose by trying …

7. If you need to venture out to the stores, plan to do it at a time when you have the most energy.

8. Look into community organizations and volunteer bureaus that may be able to provide assistance. There are many volunteers looking for something to do.

9. Inform the school and others who are significant in your child’s life about your health. Sharing the news allows them to interact with your children in helpful ways. It also will help teachers make sense of any behavior changes.

10. Contact professionals who may be helpful to both yourself, partner, children or other family members.

11. Avoid conflict by remembering this simple anogram: C.L.A.S.H. (Communicate, Listen, Answer, Share and Honesty). Practicing these skills will help you and your family get through this difficult time together.
